Lars is currently working on an artistic research project, which addresses the relation between painting and photography in the context of archive, memory, and the politics of writing history. Taking a point of departure in new approaches to History Painting, a genre which was the most prestigious one until the late 19th century, the project investigates the relation between painting and documentary photography with emphasis on the time factor and the transformation of the historical photo as a source of emotion and knowledge. Basically, the project raises the question: What may history painting of the year 2011 look like?
During the academic year 2011-2012, Lars will be carrying out this project within the Mejan Residents-programme at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. The aim of the programme is, according to the school’s web site, “to develop an artistic research project of a high quality that will be publicly presented. The process should be documented and critically and contextually reflected upon in a suitable presentation format.”
